The Experience

We met our guide, Sam, right by the lions out front — he waved before I even realized it was him. No crowds to push through (skip-the-line is a real thing here), which already felt like a small victory. The first thing that hit me was this faint smell of old wood and varnish as we stepped inside the Art Institute of Chicago. I’d seen photos of “Nighthawks” and “American Gothic” before, but standing there with someone who actually knew the backstories — it’s different. Sam told us about Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Sky Above Clouds” like he’d seen her paint it himself. I tried to imagine what she saw out that airplane window. Didn’t quite get there, but maybe that’s the point.

There was this moment at the Hartwell Memorial Window — sunlight coming through all those colors, and for a second everyone just went quiet. Even the security guard stopped fiddling with his radio. We wandered past Seurat’s dots (I still can’t believe how patient you’d have to be), and Sam laughed when I said I’d probably give up halfway through one corner. He showed us some weird little details in Van Gogh’s “The Bedroom” that I never would’ve noticed alone — like how the floor tilts just enough to make you feel off-balance if you stare too long.

I think what surprised me most was how personal everything felt, even though we were surrounded by so much history. We talked about Chagall’s windows and Hopper’s lonely diners, and Sam mentioned how schoolkids sometimes try to copy Warhol’s Mona Lisas in crayon. There were families, older couples, students sketching quietly in corners — all these lives crossing paths for a couple hours in Chicago. The tour ended before I was ready for it to; two hours went by fast. Still thinking about those blue glass windows.
