Forty-five minutes on the water, six landmark buildings, one river that tells Chicago's story.

You board at the Magnificent Mile, cruise the main and south branches of the Chicago River, and pass six major landmarks — Marina City, Wrigley Building, Merchandise Mart, and more — with a local guide explaining the architecture and history. The boat includes a restroom and climate-controlled shelter, and the whole thing takes 45 minutes from dock to dock.

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Learn history of the Riverwalk
  • Hear history of the bridge
  • See the Wrigley Building
  • View the Merchandise Mart
  • Learn about Lyric Opera House
  • Pass Marina City apartments

The Experience

The boat pushes off from the Magnificent Mile dock and the city tilts into view. You're moving along the main branch of the Chicago River now, and the guide is already talking about the Wrigley Building at 400 N Michigan Ave — named for one of Chicago's most famous industrialists — and how the architecture here wasn't built all at once but layered over decades. Marina City rises up on the left, those twin corn-cob towers that locals call "a city within a city," and you start to see what the guide means about the river being a kind of open-air museum. The Merchandise Mart slides past, one of the largest buildings in the country, and it's the scale of it that gets you — not a photo, but the actual size when you're floating beneath it.

The tour moves into the south branch, and the guide points out the Lyric Opera House, the bridges, the way the river bends and the buildings respond to it. You learn the history of the Riverwalk as you pass it, and the whole thing has a rhythm to it — the boat's motion, the guide's voice, the way each building has a story that connects to the next one. It's family-friendly, which means kids aren't bored and the pace doesn't feel rushed. The boat has indoor and outdoor seating, so if the weather turns or you want sun, you can move around. There's a restroom on board and a climate-controlled lounge, which matters on a day when Chicago's wind is doing its thing.

Forty-five minutes is short enough that you're not sitting too long, but long enough to actually absorb what you're seeing. You arrive 30 minutes before departure, and then you're on the water. No need to navigate the river yourself or figure out which buildings matter — the guide handles that, and Wendella's vessels are built for this route, so you're not crammed in with a hundred other people.

What’s included

Your 45-minute cruise includes all fees and taxes, a local guide narrating the architecture and history, a restroom on board, and access to an enclosed climate-controlled lounge. Indoor and outdoor seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
