The Experience

Four hours on the water means you leave the Portland waterfront and paddle into the working islands of Casco Bay—the ones between the open ocean and the harbor, not the tourist version. A licensed Maine guide leads the group through a route that changes with the tide and the weather, so the exact islands and landmarks shift each day. You'll paddle past lighthouses, historic forts and the kind of rocky shoreline that holds seals; eider ducks, herons and osprey are common sights. Most paddlers get a tandem kayak (two-person, more stable and spacious), though you can request a solo if you have some sea kayaking experience already.

Halfway through, you land on an island beach to rest and eat a snack Portland Paddle provides. The break gives your shoulders a moment and lets you take in the bay from the shore instead of the cockpit. After that you're back out, paddling the second half of the route before heading back to the launch point. The whole thing—lesson, paddle, landing, return—fits inside the four hours, so there's no long drive before or after.

Bring shoes that can get wet and a warm layer; the drybag keeps your phone and keys dry. You need at least a moderate level of fitness and some comfort in the water, though the guide teaches the basics before you launch.
