The Experience

You start at the bike shop in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea and ride out through the town's cottages—many of them the storybook houses built by architect Hugh Comstock in the 1920s, with steep roofs and rounded doors that look like they stepped out of a fairy tale. The ride takes you down Scenic Drive, a one-way road hugging the coastline with views that open up as you go. You pass the Tor House and Hawk Tower—stone structures inspired by Irish towers, surrounded by an English cottage garden—and the Butterfly House, a mid-century modern home with a wing-shaped roof that was listed for $40 million in 2023. The Mrs. Clinton Walker House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1948, sits on Carmel Point overlooking the bay; it's the only Wright house with an ocean view. You'll also ride past Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch, a 22-acre property that was once one of California's first dairies and is now restored as an inn. At Carmel River State Beach, you stop at the mouth of the river where it meets the sea—a bird sanctuary with views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

The tour ends at the Carmel Mission, one of California's oldest structures and the most authentically restored Catholic mission church in the state.
