The experience

The tour starts and ends at Pedego's brick-and-mortar shop just north of Pearl Street in downtown Boulder, where you'll meet your guide and get fitted to an electric bike. From there, you'll ride the Boulder Creek Path (a separated bike route that runs through the heart of the city) heading south toward the foothills. The e-bike motor lets you cover ground and climb elevation without the exhaustion of a standard bike, which matters because this route hits 1000 feet of vertical gain over 15 miles.

Your guide will show you the Flatirons from three different vantage points (north, east, and south), so you see how the mountain profile changes as you move through town. You'll stop at Chautauqua Park, positioned at the base of the Flatirons, where the guide explains both the historical significance and the modern activities the park hosts. The route then takes you through the CU Boulder campus via quiet bike paths and residential streets. Depending on the day, you might see the buffalo-shaped lap pool or climb to the rooftop of the Memorial Center. The tour also includes a ride up one of Boulder's steeper roads to NCAR, the mountaintop research facility, where you get views of both the Front Range and the city before descending back toward downtown.

Near the end, you'll pass through Eben G. Fine Park and get a look at Folsom Field, home of the Buffs football team. The guide will point out the farmer's market and the history of Boulder's Tea House as you loop back. All riders wear helmets, and the guide provides directions in English throughout. You need to be comfortable riding a bike before you arrive (this is not a learn-to-ride experience), and you'll need to bring an ID and credit card to check in.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Flatirons and why does the tour stop there?

The Flatirons are Boulder's iconic mountain formation visible from multiple points in the city. The tour shows them from the north, east, and south so you see how the skyline changes as you move through town, and you stop at Chautauqua Park at their base, where the guide discusses the park's history and current activities.

How steep is this tour and will the e-bike handle the climbing?

The route covers 15 miles with over 1000 feet of elevation gain. The electric motor on the Pedego bike does the heavy lifting on climbs, so you're pedaling but not fighting the hill. The guide will take you up one of Boulder's steepest roads to NCAR without the exhaustion of a standard bike.

Do I need to know how to ride a bike before I book?

Yes. You must be comfortable riding a bike and able to get on a regular bike and ride for a distance before you arrive. This tour is not a learn-to-ride experience, and refunds are not given to riders who cannot participate due to inability to ride.

What happens at CU Boulder campus during the tour?

Your group will ride through the campus on quiet bike paths and may stop at the buffalo-shaped lap pool or visit the rooftop of the Memorial Center. You'll also see Folsom Field, the home of the Buffs football stadium, at the center of campus.

Is there a minimum age or fitness requirement?

All riders must be 18 years old or older. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Minimum height is 4'11" and maximum weight is 280 pounds.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes a professional local guide, the electric bike, and a helmet. The guide provides all directions in English and leads you through the entire route, but gratuities are not included.
