The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the hush. Even with a few people in our group, the Boch Center Wang Theatre in Boston just kind of swallows up sound—3,500 seats, all empty, and you can almost hear your own shoes echo. Our guide, Sam, waved us over to the edge of the stage and said, “This is where Lady Gaga stood,” which made me laugh because I’d never really pictured her in Boston before. The velvet seats looked like something out of an old movie. There’s this faint scent—old wood and maybe popcorn from another era? I kept glancing up at the ceiling; it’s ridiculously ornate.

We ducked through hallways lined with photos—Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Neil Young. Sam told us about how the theatre started as a “movie cathedral” back in 1925. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing under those huge spotlights (they let us try it for a second). The lights are warm but everything else felt cool—maybe it was just nerves or excitement. At one point someone asked if Bruce Springsteen ever got lost backstage; Sam just grinned and said, “You’d be surprised.”

The Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame was tucked away but packed with stories—guitars behind glass, handwritten lyrics from artists I grew up listening to. One display had this battered harmonica that apparently survived a tour bus fire (the story was wild). There were little audio clips playing in corners; I caught bits of Dylan and some bluegrass I didn’t recognize. Honestly, I could’ve stayed there longer just reading all the tiny notes people left on the wall about what music meant to them. We finished back in the main hall and I found myself looking at the empty stage one last time—I still think about that view sometimes when a song comes on at home.
