The Experience

I met our guide—a real Bostonian, you could just tell—right outside the Boston Public Library. There was this bronze statue with a ball in its hand, which I almost missed because I got distracted by the library’s carved lions and all that stone. We started there, and honestly, I didn’t expect to care so much about architecture, but she made it feel like we were reading the city’s diary. Every building seemed to have its own little secret. I tried to snap a photo of the ceiling mosaics inside but my phone camera couldn’t quite catch the gold—she showed me how to angle it for better light. Didn’t nail it, but it was fun trying.

Copley Square was next. The old Trinity Church sits right across from glassy skyscrapers—kind of wild seeing them side by side like that. Our guide pointed out some details on the church’s stonework that I’d never have noticed (she said one carving looked like a grumpy fish—I still don’t see it). The square itself felt busy but not rushed; there was this faint smell of roasted nuts from a vendor cart drifting over as we walked toward the Boston Public Garden. The garden was full of tulips and those famous Swan Boats gliding by—so many people smiling for photos that I felt less silly crouching down for my own shot.

Beacon Hill came after, all brick sidewalks and iron fences and these gas lamps that look like they belong in another century. We stopped at Acorn Street—the most photographed street in Boston, apparently—and yeah, everyone immediately pulled out their phones. Our guide gave us a tip about lining up the cobblestones for depth (I tried; jury’s out). A couple walked past holding hands, laughing about something only they knew. It felt peaceful there, even with everyone trying to get “the shot.”

I’m not sure if my photos will win any awards, but now when I look at them I remember how the bricks felt under my shoes and how our guide told stories about people who lived here before us. Two hours went fast—I left wanting to wander more backstreets or maybe just sit on a bench in the garden and watch people float by on those boats again.
