You're at the controls the whole time, not watching from the edge.

Boston Hot Tub Boats is a private, two-hour self-drive experience on calm harbor water where you steer a wood-fired hot tub boat yourself while soaking shoulder-deep with up to five guests. The crew rides out with you, stays aboard until you're comfortable at the controls, then follows in a separate inflatable within radio and sight range for the entire cruise. Water is drained and refilled fresh before every group and heated to the temperature you choose, up to 104°F.

The experience

Check in at Atlantis Marina in Winthrop, 15 minutes from downtown Boston, with free parking at the dock. You get your own private changing tent beside the boat, and restrooms are on shore. Before departure, the crew walks you through the controls (a tiller to steer and a knob for forward and reverse), and hands out waterproof phone cases so you can shoot video from the water. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all six are stowed at the bow and shown to you before you leave.

The crew rides out with you to show you how to leave the marina and reach the navigation zone, staying aboard until you feel fully comfortable at the controls. Only then do they step into an inflatable that stays within immediate reach for the whole two hours. You remain in sight and on the radio throughout. From there, the boat is yours. You cruise at a gentle 3–4 mph on calm, sheltered water between Logan Airport and Constitution Beach, the downtown skyline ahead and aircraft passing low enough to make you duck on the first pass. The tub is extra-deep, so all six of you sit shoulder-deep in water that's been drained, scrubbed and refilled with fresh drinking-quality water before your group arrived, never recirculated.

Bring your own towel and swimwear. You can bring drinks in cans or plastic (no glass, no hard alcohol), but no food on board. One guest aged 21 or over acts as Designated Captain with a valid driver's license and no alcohol during the cruise. The crew photographs your group from the dock and sends the pictures to you the same evening, with everyone in them and nobody stuck behind a camera.

Is this one for you?You steer the boat yourself the entire two hours, with the crew riding out and staying aboard until you're comfortable, then following in a separate inflatable within sight and radio range. This setup suits anyone who wants to be in control of the experience rather than handed a tour, and families or groups of friends who want a private, unrushed two hours on the water without a fixed itinerary or schedule.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can I really steer the boat myself if I've never done this before?

Yes. The crew rides out with you and stays aboard until you're fully comfortable at the controls, showing you how to leave the marina and navigate the zone. They don't hand you the keys and leave. They stay until you feel ready, then move to the inflatable nearby and remain on the radio the whole time.

What's the water like, is it actually clean if six people are soaking in it?

The tub is drained, scrubbed and refilled with fresh drinking-quality water before every single group. It's never recirculated, so you're always the first people in it. You choose the temperature, from cool and refreshing up to 104°F.

How close do the planes really come?

Close enough that the first one makes most people duck. You cruise on calm, sheltered water between Logan Airport and Constitution Beach at a gentle 3–4 mph, so aircraft pass low overhead throughout the two hours.

What's included and what do I need to bring?

Included are the private boat and hot tub for two hours, free parking at the marina, waterproof phone cases, bottled water, life jackets, a Bluetooth speaker, floating cup holders, a dry bag for wallets and keys, private changing tents and on-water instruction. Bring your own towel and swimwear. You can bring drinks in cans or plastic but no glass or hard alcohol, and no food on board.

Where exactly do we meet, and how far is it from downtown?

Atlantis Marina in Winthrop is 15 minutes from downtown Boston and has free parking at the dock. You check in at the top of the ramp, and the crew walks you down to the boat.
