Your guide carries a Garmin GPS communicator and first aid into terrain most hikers never reach.

A custom guided day hike in the Bitterroot Mountains pairs you with a wilderness first responder certified guide who plans the route before you go, then leads you through the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. All essential hiking gear (backpack, trekking poles, bear spray) comes with the tour, along with trail snacks and the guide's water filter and GPS communicator. Hikes range from a few hours to a full day. July and August trips include huckleberry picking. You'll learn to identify plants, animals, rocks and minerals as you go, and you must be able to hike 6 to 8 miles with up to 2,000 feet of elevation gain and step across creeks on unstable stones.

The experience

The Bitterroot National Forest stretches from Florence down to Darby with trails most day hikers never find. You plan the route with your guide before the hike starts (choosing the distance, the elevation and the terrain that fit your fitness level), then set out with someone who carries a Garmin GPS communicator, first aid kit, water filter and bear spray. Your guide is wilderness first responder certified, leave no trace certified and food handler certified, which means the backcountry stays intact and you stay safe in terrain where cell service doesn't reach.

All essential gear comes with the tour: a Hyperlight Mountain Gear backpack, Black Diamond trekking poles, bear spray and a backpacking stove for fresh tea or coffee along the way. Trail snacks include beef jerky (vegan available), trail mix, fig bars, fruit leather and chocolate cookies. The hike itself is the education: your guide points out plants, animals, rocks and minerals as you move through the landscape. Book in July or August and the route can include huckleberry picking where the season allows.

The hike demands moderate fitness and the ability to climb over downed trees at waist height and step across creeks on stones that may shift under your weight. No mountain climbing is involved, but you need to manage 6 to 8 miles and up to 2,000 feet of elevation. Bring your own sunscreen, rain gear, warm layers and sun protection: the mountains get chilly at the top and thunderstorms roll in most afternoons around 3 pm. Ask the operator about transportation to the trailhead when you book.
