The Experience
The tour starts with a stop at the old Ghost Town of Scenic, where you can step into the weathered jail and peer through windows at what life looked like in the late 1800s. From there, the route moves to the agate fields in the Grasslands. A rock-hound-friendly site where you're welcome to search for and take home a stone or two. The guide then drives the Badlands Loop itself, stopping along the way to point out the formations, wildlife, mineral deposits and open sky that most visitors miss by staying on the main road.
The overlooks are the heart of the day. Pinnacles Overlook shows you the towering formations sculpted by wind and water over millions of years, their stripes of red, yellow and white marking the layers of sedimentary rock. Sage Creek Basin Overlook stretches across rolling prairies and the winding course of Sage Creek, where bison roam and prairie dogs play. At each stop, the guide explains the geological history, the wildlife adapted to this harsh landscape, and the stories of the Paleo-Indians and homesteaders who lived here. A break at the Visitors Center gives you time to rest, ask the park staff questions, and pick up a souvenir.
Lunch happens at Wall Drug, a roadside curiosity that has been operating for nearly 100 years and is known worldwide for its free water and unmistakable billboards. The stop gives you time to eat and explore what started as a modest drug store in a struggling town and grew into a sprawling operation. The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout, and the guide brings water, snacks and binoculars so you don't have to arrange them yourself.

What's the Ghost Town of Scenic actually like?
Scenic is an old settlement from the late 1800s where you can look into the weathered jail and peer through windows of abandoned buildings to see what life looked like in that era. How much time do I spend actually driving through Badlands National Park?
