The experience

This is a quarter-day trip built around one simple fact: families with little kids need whitewater that won't scare them, and a finish line that doesn't add an hour of wet, cold walking. The five-mile float down the Arkansas River hits Class II-III rapids (the kind that splash and move but don't flip boats), while the Sangre de Cristo Range sits across the water. You meet your guide at the Cotopaxi location, get fitted into a helmet, life vest, splash jacket and wetsuit, sit through a safety talk, then ride a short shuttle to the put-in. Once you're on the water, the guide gives specific instructions and then you float the mellow sections, watching the scenery change as the current carries you downstream.

The trip ends at the operator's private beach, which is the reason this outfitter is the only one running this particular route. You pull out of the water, walk a few steps to the changing area, and dry off right there. Action photos from the river are available to buy if you want them. The whole experience, from arrival to departure, takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours depending on water flow and how long the group lingers on the beach.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (4 to 12 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.

What rapids will my four-year-old actually encounter on the Arkansas River?

The Arkansas River float runs Class II-III rapids, which means moving water with small waves and splashes but no big drops or holes. The guide picks the calmest line through each rapid and stays with the boat the whole way, so kids stay seated and safe. This trip is the introductory float for the river, designed specifically so young children experience whitewater without fear.

Do I need to bring my own wetsuit or does the outfitter provide it?

The outfitter provides helmet, life vest, splash jacket and wetsuit as part of the trip. You wear synthetic clothing underneath (swimwear, workout gear, or similar), and avoid cotton, which stays cold when wet. Sandals or sneakers with a heel won't work. Bring water shoes or go barefoot.

How long is the actual time on the water versus driving and getting ready?

The whole trip from check-in to departure takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours. That includes the safety briefing, the shuttle to the put-in, the five-mile float itself, and time to change into dry clothes at the riverside base. The float is the main event. The setup and shuttle are quick.

What happens at the end of the trip? Do we have to walk far to get back to the car?

You finish at the operator's private beach in Cotopaxi, right at their riverside base. There's no long walk. You step out of the water, change into dry clothes at the facility, and you're done. This is the only outfitter offering this trip because they own the finishing point, so families don't spend the last hour of the day wet and cold.

Are souvenir photos from the river included, or do I have to pay extra?

Action photos are taken during the trip and available to purchase if you want them. They're not included in the base price, but the option to buy them is there at the end of the day.
