The Experience

I didn’t expect the silence at Earthquake Park to hit so hard. Our guide, Mike, pulled up and let us wander the trails where whole neighborhoods once slid away in ’64. The ground still feels uneven underfoot—like it remembers. There were signs with old photos and stories; I caught myself just standing there, listening to wind in the birch trees and thinking about how fast things can change. Mike told us his grandma lived through that quake. He laughed when I asked if he’d ever felt one—apparently “just a few tiny ones,” but he still checks his shelves for wobbly mugs.

After that, we drove out past Ship Creek (smelled faintly like fish and river mud) and stopped at Lake Hood. It’s the busiest seaplane base in the world, which sounds made-up until you see all those little planes skipping across the water every couple minutes. One pilot waved as he taxied by—felt like something from an old movie. There was a cold breeze off the lake, but honestly I barely noticed because I was watching a floatplane lift off right over our heads. Mike pointed out Denali way off in the haze; we squinted but maybe just imagined it.

We made quick stops at Beluga Point (no whales today, but gulls everywhere) and Potter Marsh, where you walk this wooden boardwalk through reeds and shallow water. Saw a bald eagle perched up in a cottonwood tree—my phone camera did not do it justice. By then my hands were freezing but I didn’t really care. The whole thing felt like dipping into Anchorage’s weird mix of city and wild all at once. We finished up with a view back toward downtown—clouds rolling over the Chugach mountains—and then got dropped off right at our hotel door.
