Step-by-step itinerary
Wildlife and Glacier Exploration
- Visit Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
- Admire Portage Glacier for 60 minutes
- Drive by Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge and scenic points
The Experience
The day starts with the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you'll see Alaska's big wildlife — moose, bears, caribou and other animals in their habitat. From there, the route heads south toward Portage, passing through the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge, Potter Marsh, Beluga Point, Indian Valley and Bird Creek. These stops let you watch the landscape and wildlife from the vehicle as the guide shares the history and culture of Anchorage and why this place matters to those who live here.
The 60-minute Portage Glacier cruise is the centerpiece. You board a boat and float on the water in front of the glacier itself — the itinerary notes this hour will be the most interesting part of your time in Anchorage. The glacier, the water and the scale of it are things you see from the boat, not from a distance. After the cruise, the return drive gives you another pass through the coastal wildlife areas.
An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group for the full 7 to 8 hours. Your guide speaks English and leads the stops. Admission to both the Wildlife Center and the glacier cruise are included, along with a water bottle. Pickup from your Anchorage location is part of the booking.
