The Experience
“If you listen close, you’ll hear the rocks talking,” our guide Sam said as we shuffled out near Thunder Hole. I laughed because it sounded like something out of a storybook, but then the ocean slammed into the hollow and it really did sound like a deep voice echoing up from under the cliffs. The salt in the air was so sharp I could almost taste it. We’d started early from Bar Harbor—Sam picked us up right at our door, coffee in hand (bless)—and by the time we hit Jordan Pond, the sun was just starting to burn off that cold Maine mist.
I didn’t expect to care about popovers, but there’s this old tradition at Jordan Pond House where you eat these warm, eggy rolls with jam while looking out over water so still it’s like glass. Sam told us how locals would skate across it in winter—hard to picture with all that green around us now. The hike up to Bubble Rock was steeper than I thought (my legs reminded me of that for days), but when we got to the top and looked down at Jordan Pond below, everything went quiet except for some distant loon calls. It felt like we’d earned that view.
We had choices—Sam offered Precipice Trail for those feeling brave (not me this time), or easier paths along Ocean Path where wildflowers poked through cracks in the granite. Lunch was this picnic spread with real plates and local cheese; honestly, I wasn’t expecting it to be that good. There was a moment when everyone just stopped talking and let the breeze move through us. Afterward, we drove up to Cadillac Mountain—the highest point in Acadia—and watched clouds roll over pine forests and sea. I still think about that light shifting on the water.
