The experience
The tour starts in Bar Harbor itself, where your guide points out the Gilded Age cottages that survived the 1947 fire: the inns and hotels that once belonged to high-society families. From there, Acadia is just a few minutes' drive. You'll climb Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on Mount Desert Island, where the views sweep across nearly the entire outline of the island: Bar Harbor and the cruise ships in Frenchman Bay on one side, the open ocean and small islands dotting the coastline on the other. Your guide will point out landmarks you're about to see from closer up as you continue around the Park Loop roads.
The route moves through the oldest sections of the park: Eagle Lake on the way, then down to the Ocean Path, where granite slabs slope into the water. You can walk the path at your own pace while your guide finds a spot to meet you further down, or stay in the vehicle and stop at overlooks. Your guide knows the hidden pathways where you see the best views without tripping over tourists. Thunder Hole, where waves crash with a thunderous boom when conditions are right, sits among harbor roses and asters on the granite. The Ocean Path runs all the way to Otter Cliffs, winding through pine forest with moss and lichen before opening onto one of the best ocean views in the park. A secretive cove with rocks that add their own music to each wave is one of your guide's favorite stops.
How the tour ends depends on what you want to see and how much time you want to spend. You can finish at Jordan Pond, the deep glacially carved lake where Bubble Rock seems to balance impossibly from the mountainside. Or your guide can take you out along the edge of the park to see the Rockefeller bridges, upscale summer neighborhoods, gardens, and Sommes Sound: the only fjord on the eastern seaboard of the United States, where you might spot eagles, osprey, or seals. Your guide adjusts the route based on weather and what will be most beautiful that day. Bottled water and snacks are included. All park fees and taxes are covered.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the difference between driving the Park Loop Road on my own and taking this private tour?
A private guide knows which overlooks and hidden pathways show the best views without the crowds, and can adjust the route based on weather and your group's interests. You don't navigate or worry about missing something. The guide handles the driving and knows which stops are worth your time that particular day. The park passes are included, so there's no stop at the gate.
Can I walk on the Ocean Path, or do I have to stay in the vehicle the whole time?
You have the option to walk the Ocean Path at your own pace while your guide finds a spot to meet you further down the road. The tour includes opportunities for short walks or hikes, but none are required: Acadia's roads were built to showcase the views without leaving your vehicle, so you can see everything from the car if you prefer.
Does the tour go to Cadillac Mountain?
Yes. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on Mount Desert Island and a main stop on the tour. Your guide will point out the views across Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, the open ocean and the small islands along the coastline, then use those landmarks to orient you as you explore the rest of the park from closer up.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your guide adjusts the route based on weather conditions to showcase the areas that will be most beautiful that day. If visibility is poor at Cadillac Mountain, the guide will choose other stops that will be more impactful in those conditions.
Is pickup from my hotel included?
Yes. Free pickup and drop-off from your Bar Harbor location are included in the tour price. Your guide will arrange the time that works for your schedule.
How long does the tour actually take?
The tour runs about four hours. Your guide sets the pace to match your group's interests and abilities. There's no rush, and you're not checking stops off a list. If your group wants to spend more time at one place or move quickly through another, the guide adjusts accordingly.
