Learn glacier travel, rope skills and self-arrest on your way to a 10,781-foot summit.

A 3-day guided climb of Mount Baker, one of the Cascade volcanoes in Washington, teaches you snow travel, glacier navigation and rope-team movement before a summit attempt via the Easton or Squak Glacier. You'll spend two nights at base camp, wake before dawn on summit day, and descend to a victory meal in town. All major gear is included or available to borrow, and the trip suits both beginners and experienced climbers with at least moderate fitness.

The experience

The climb starts with a gear check and trip overview in Sedro-Woolley, then a hike to base camp where you'll learn the fundamentals: ice axe technique, footwork on snow, and how to set up a safe camp. Your guide covers the systems you'll use the next morning when you rope up as a team and move across the glacier in darkness before dawn breaks over the North Cascades.

Summit day is the core of the trip. You'll apply everything you learned on Day 1 (snow travel, self-arrest techniques, glacier navigation) as a rope team moving together toward the 10,781-foot peak. The alpine start means an early wake, but it gets you climbing in stable snow and moving as the light comes up. After the summit, you descend back to camp for rest and food.

Day 3 is a relaxed morning at camp before the final descent to the trailhead. The trip wraps with a meal in town where you'll mark what you've accomplished: new mountaineering skills, a summit, and a clear sense of what comes next on steeper peaks. Dinner, breakfast, tents and all major climbing gear are included. You bring layers, a headlamp and personal items.

What’s included

  • Dinner and breakfast each day.
  • tents and sleeping arrangements at base camp.
  • all major climbing gear including ice axes, crampons, harnesses and ropes (or available to borrow).
  • professional guide instruction in snow travel, self-arrest and glacier navigation.
  • summit celebration meal in town on Day 3.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What mountaineering skills do I actually learn on this climb?

You learn ice axe use, footwork on snow, self-arrest techniques (how to stop yourself if you slip), and glacier navigation as part of a rope team. Day 1 covers the basics at base camp. Day 2 is when you apply them while climbing Mount Baker itself.

Do I need climbing experience to summit Mount Baker on this trip?

No. The trip is designed for both beginners and experienced climbers. You need at least a moderate level of physical fitness and the ability to move over snow and ice for several hours, but the guide teaches the technical skills as you go.

What happens if weather or conditions prevent a summit attempt?

The itinerary includes a summit attempt on Day 2, but alpine conditions can change. Your guide makes the call based on safety and snow conditions. The trip still covers glacier travel and mountaineering instruction regardless of whether the summit is reached.

What's included in the gear, and what do I need to bring?

All major climbing gear (ice axes, crampons, harnesses, ropes, tents) is included or available to borrow. You bring your own layers, insulated jacket, headlamp, personal toiletries, and any medications. Breakfast and dinner are provided. Bring snacks for the day.
