Step-by-step itinerary
10,000 Islands Boat and Beach Tour
- Meet guide and start tour
- Boat eco tour searching wildlife
- Learn about local history and ecosystems
- Shell collecting on remote island beach
- Photo at Cape Romano Dome Homes
The experience
The tour splits into two parts. First, you board the boat and head into the 10,000 Islands with your guide searching for dolphins, manatees, snowy egrets, little blue herons, tricolor herons, roseate spoonbills, ospreys, eagles and other wading birds. The guide narrates the area's history, cultures and ecosystems as you move through the waterways. Every trip is different depending on what wildlife is active and where the water conditions allow the boat to go.
The second half moves to a remote barrier island accessible only by boat. You walk the beaches and explore the tidal pools and inter-tidal zones on foot with your guide. This island is known for the best shell collection opportunities in Florida. The beach is strewn with shells you won't find elsewhere. Before heading back, you stop at Cape Romano to see the famous Dome Homes, a unique structure at the very tip of Southwest Florida.
The entire experience runs 3.5 hours. Note that from June through October, the operator recommends morning departures due to weather patterns. You'll need to board the boat by ladder, though with advance notice you can arrange loading from a floating dock instead. Infants must sit on an adult's lap. The tour suits families with children from age 6 and people of all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
