The experience

The day starts with a taxi to The Baths on Virgin Gorda, where a guide leads a 1.5-mile hike through the National Park's boulder maze: rock formations, caves and grottos open onto some of the Caribbean's least crowded beaches. This is not a quick photo stop. The hike takes time and the guide shows you the spots most visitors miss. After that comes Cooper Island Beach Club, an eco-resort with a solar-powered micro-brewery and open-air restaurant overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Lunch and drinks are on your own there, but the setting is built for lingering.

The snorkel happens at a remote reef near Norman Island, the uninhabited island where Blackbeard once anchored. The water is clear enough to see the bottom without effort, and if you'd rather float than dive, that works too. After the reef, the boat heads back to clear U.S. customs. This is an international crossing, so the return includes a stop at the customs office in St. John or St. Thomas, depending on where you started. The whole loop runs 9.5 hours from pickup to drop-off.

Bring a valid passport. It is non-negotiable for this trip. Customs fees of $85 cash are separate from the booking price. The boat carries an open bar, so water and alcoholic beverages stay flowing all day. Snorkel gear is provided, and the crew (captain and mate) handle the navigation and the stops.
