The Experience

Our driver, Winston, greeted us with this big grin and a “You ready for some real St. Thomas?” before we’d even climbed into his van. He had Bob Marley playing low and the air smelled faintly of sunscreen and fried plantains from somewhere nearby—maybe that little stand by the docks? We started along the waterfront, Winston pointing out the old Danish warehouses now turned into shops on Main Street. I tried to pronounce “Dronningens Gade” like he did (not even close), and he just laughed and told me to stick with English.

The 99 Steps were steeper than they looked in photos—my legs felt it, but I liked running my hand over the old bricks, still cool in the morning shade. Some local kids zipped past us like it was nothing. At Blackbeard’s Castle, Winston shared stories about pirates that sounded half-true, half-legend; I honestly couldn’t tell where history ended and his own jokes started. The view over Charlotte Amalie from up there is something I still think about—sunlight bouncing off red rooftops and all those boats bobbing in the harbor.

We stopped at Drake’s Seat for a break (I needed it after those steps), then headed up Skyline Drive where you can see forever—or at least as far as Hassel Island and Water Island. At Mountain Top, everyone talks about banana daiquiris but I didn’t expect them to taste so… tropical? Maybe it was just being up there with that breeze cutting through the humidity. The shop had all sorts of souvenirs but I mostly watched clouds drift over Magens Bay below.

Magens Bay itself was quieter than I imagined—a few families under palm trees, water calm as glass. Winston let us stay as long as we wanted; no rush at all. I floated for ages watching tiny fish dart around my toes. When we finally left (reluctantly), he said locals come here when they need to clear their heads. Makes sense now.
