The experience

You decide what the day looks like. The operator starts with a standard itinerary (the scenic loop past the pirate castles, up Crown Mountain to the duty-free shops, and down to Drake's Seat), but the stops, the timing and the beach you visit are yours to set. If your group wants to skip the shopping and add extra beach time, or spend the afternoon at one site instead of moving through several, that's the tour you get. The whole day runs 5 to 7 hours depending on what you choose, and the private vehicle means no schedule but your own.

The scenic portion takes in the castles overlooking the harbor, Crown Mountain as one of the island's highest points, views across to neighboring islands, and Drake's Seat: each stop a lookout or a place to step out. Between the fixed sights, you pick the beach: Coki and Sapphire are free. Magens Bay charges $7 per person at the gate. Downtown Charlotte Amalie is where the shopping happens, and the operator meets your group at the Liberty Bell in Emancipation Park when you're done. Complimentary water and soft drinks travel with you all day on the bus. You'll want to bring cash for lunch, drinks beyond what's on board, souvenirs, and any beach entrance fees.

If you're arriving by ship, the operator will wait for you if the boat runs late, giving you time to clear the dock and still make the tour. They'll get you back to your ship in time for departure, or to your hotel if you're staying on the island. While you're shopping or at the beach, your belongings stay secured in the front cab of the bus.

How does the shopping stop work if we're on a tight schedule?

When shopping is part of your tour, you meet the group at the Liberty Bell in Emancipation Park when you're finished. Note that shops close at 1 PM on Sundays, so timing matters if you're visiting on a weekend. Your belongings stay secured in the front cab of the bus while you shop.
