So when we got to St. Croix and heard about this snorkeling tour, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The morning felt sticky-warm as we shuffled down the sand with our guide, who grew up here and seemed to know every ripple of the bay. There was this salty breeze mixing with sunscreen and something sweet from the beach bar nearby — not unpleasant at all.
We started right from the shore, which honestly made things less intimidating (I’m not exactly a pro swimmer). Our guide handed out masks and life jackets, checking everything twice — she joked that the turtles don’t mind if you look goofy in your gear. The water was so clear it almost looked fake; you could see flashes of silver fish darting around your feet before you even put your face in. And then, maybe ten minutes in, there it was: a Hawksbill turtle gliding past like it had somewhere to be but didn’t mind us tagging along for a bit.
I tried snapping a picture but mostly just floated there watching its shell catch little flecks of sunlight — kind of mesmerizing, honestly. At one point I got distracted by these tiny purple corals swaying below me (our guide called them “sea fans,” which sounds poetic until you try saying it underwater). Someone in our group laughed through their snorkel when a Green turtle popped up nearby — it startled me so much I swallowed some seawater. Still worth it.
Afterwards I kept thinking about how calm everything felt underwater compared to the chatter onshore. You forget about your phone or what time it is — there’s just the sound of your own breathing and maybe someone else giggling through their mask now and then. Would do it again in a heartbeat, even if my hair still smells like salt two days later.
