The experience
Four to five hours takes you through Colonia Suiza, a town founded by European immigrants in the 19th century and still shaped by the architectural and cultural legacy of its Swiss, German, Austrian, French and Italian communities. The bilingual guide walks you past the main monuments, squares and historic buildings, explaining how each group left its mark on the region's identity and traditions. You'll see the physical evidence of that heritage in the streets themselves. The way the town is laid out, the styles of the buildings, the way people have preserved what their ancestors built.
The cheese tasting happens at a local artisan shop, where you learn how the cheesemaking tradition took root here in the 19th century and why Colonia Suiza became one of Uruguay's main cheese regions. The producer walks you through the traditional process, shows you the importance of dairy farming to the area's economy, and lets you taste the regional products that come out of it. This is not a restaurant meal. It's a direct look at how one craft has defined the local food culture for generations.
Transportation throughout the tour is included, as is the guide in your choice of English, Spanish, Portuguese or German. An insurance policy and emergency medical service come with the booking. The tour suits all fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible. Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and service animals are welcome.
