A 17th-century Portuguese city sits inside a modern Uruguayan town, and the tour separates them.

A half-day guided tour of Colonia del Sacramento covers the UNESCO-listed historic district, the coastal Rambla, and the Real de San Carlos complex with its Plaza de Toros and Hippodrome, ending at the old pier. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included. The guide speaks Spanish. The tour is not suitable for cruise passengers.

The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and heads first to Real de San Carlos, where you'll stop at the chapel of San Benito and the Mihanovich complex built in 1910. From there it moves through the former hotel (now the Polytechnic University of Valencia), the Plaza de Toros, El Fronton, the Hippodrome, the power station and the pier. This sequence traces the 19th and early 20th-century expansion of the city outward from its colonial core.

Once you reach the west coast, the route follows the bay and its beaches, crossing different suburbs before arriving at the center and shopping areas. Entry to the historic district comes through the Porton de Campo, the old gate into Colonia del Sacramento itself. Here the guide walks you through the stone streets, old buildings, forts and the Spanish and Portuguese museums that earned the city its 1995 UNESCO designation as cultural heritage of mankind. You'll also visit the Port, downtown, Ferrando Beach and the Trees Reserve.

The whole experience runs about three hours in an air-conditioned vehicle with a Spanish-speaking guide. This is a shared tour, not private, and it ends back at your hotel.
