The experience

The day starts with pickup from your location and a 30-minute drive to the meeting point in the desert. Once there, you get 40 minutes of dune bashing in your vehicle: the driver navigates the sand at angles that make the ride itself the main event. After that comes sunset photography time, when the light turns the dunes gold and the shadows deepen. A short camel ride follows (3 to 5 minutes), then sand boarding down the slopes if you want to try it.

The evening unfolds at a Bedouin camp set up with lowered tables, carpets and rest areas. You'll have welcome drinks, tea, coffee and mineral water; exotic sheesha to smoke; and a full buffet dinner with grilled meats and sides. Entertainment runs through the meal: belly dancing, Egyptian dancing, Tanoura spinning and a fire show. Henna tattoo artists are on hand if you want designs on your hands, and you can dress in traditional Kandoora or Abaya costumes for photos. Rest rooms and a children's play area are available throughout.

Because this is a private tour, your guide and vehicle stay with your group the whole time, which means you set the rhythm: linger longer at sunset if the light is right, skip sand boarding if it's not your thing, or spend extra time at the camp. The guide speaks English and knows the desert well enough to answer questions as you go. Quads and buggies can be added at the meeting point for an extra cost if anyone wants a different way to move through the dunes.
