The Experience

We’d barely made it out of Dubai when our driver, Khalid, started telling stories about his childhood in the desert — something about racing cousins on camels. I laughed, thinking he was joking, but he just grinned and said, “Wait until you try.” The city slipped away so quickly it felt like we’d just blinked. Suddenly it was all sand and that strange quiet you only get far from traffic — except for the sound of tires crunching over gravel as we pulled up to the quad bikes.

I’m not gonna lie: I was nervous. Those red dunes look soft from a distance but up close they’re steep and kind of intimidating. The guide handed me a helmet (which smelled faintly of sunblock and dust) and off we went, engines buzzing under us. The wind whipped my scarf around my face as we climbed higher — at one point I nearly lost control and just had to laugh at myself. There was this moment at the top where everyone stopped talking; we watched the sun drop behind the sand, everything turning gold and pink. I still think about that view sometimes.

After sandboarding (I fell twice, but honestly it was more fun than I expected), they brought out the camels for what Khalid called our “slow-motion ride.” He wasn’t kidding — camels move like they’re thinking about every step. By then I’d worked up an appetite, so when we reached the camp and smelled charcoal smoke and spices in the air, it felt like arriving somewhere familiar even though it was all new to me. Dinner was a blur of grilled chicken, rice, someone offering me sweet tea; there was music and dancing too, but I mostly remember sitting back in the sand with henna drying on my hand, watching lanterns flicker in the dark. And then suddenly it was time to go back — hard to believe how much fit into one evening.
