The experience

Big Red Dunes, called Al Lahbab by locals, rises 300 feet above the Dubai desert and is built for the drive itself. A 4x4 Land Cruiser picks you up from your hotel in Dubai or Sharjah, and the adventure starts immediately: 35 to 40 minutes of dune bashing with a licensed guide, climbing and dropping over the high sand faces. The vehicle does the work. You feel the tilt and the speed. A photo stop at the highest dunes lets you see the scale of what you just drove, and then comes sand boarding: you slide down from the top on a board, which is fast and simple enough that it works for most people.

As the light changes, the convoy heads to the desert camp. The traditional welcome includes Arabic coffee, tea, and fresh fruit. Henna painting happens while you settle in, and a photographer arranges you in an Arabic dress for a picture. The camp has a stage with full lighting and sound, and the entertainment runs through the evening: a fire dance show, the Tanoura (a spinning Egyptian dancer in a tall colored skirt), and a belly dance performance on traditional Arabic music. Between the shows, there is a camel ride and a photo with a falcon. Dinner is a buffet of grilled meat and vegetarian dishes, served on the carpet with floor pillows.
