I just laughed — I mean, I’ve barely handled rush hour in my own city, let alone the Lehbab Desert. The 4x4 lurched forward and suddenly we were flying over these wild red dunes outside Dubai, my stomach somewhere behind me. Sand sprayed up against the windows, and every so often we’d stop so everyone could catch their breath (and snap those photos — you know the ones). The light was weirdly soft, almost pinkish on the dunes. I kept finding sand in my shoes for hours after.
We got to try quad biking too — honestly, I stalled mine twice before getting the hang of it. Our guide Ali just winked and said, “No one’s born knowing.” There was this moment where everything went quiet except for the engine hum and wind whipping past. Later at camp, someone handed me sweet tea while kids ran around in borrowed kanduras posing for photos. The smell of shisha drifted by and there was this low buzz from people chatting in half a dozen languages. Henna artists worked quietly in one corner; I still have a faint design on my wrist days later.
Dinner was a blur of grilled chicken skewers and watermelon slices under a sky that looked impossibly big. We watched dancers whirl and twirl — the fire show made everyone gasp at least once (I’m pretty sure my eyebrows survived). At some point I realized I’d stopped checking my phone entirely. On the drive back to Dubai, headlights flickered across the sand and it felt like we’d left regular life behind for a bit. Not sure if it was the desert or just being far from home, but something about that night sticks with me.
