The Experience

We were bouncing along in the back of a 4x4, windows down just enough to let the dry air whip in. The city faded behind us fast—one minute glass towers, next minute nothing but those wild red dunes stretching out everywhere. Our guide, Ahmed, kept grinning in the rearview mirror before gunning it up another sandy hill. I’d never felt sand move like that under tires—sort of soft and alive at the same time. My friend shrieked when we slid sideways (I might’ve too). It was loud inside the car but weirdly peaceful outside when we stopped for sunset.

Ahmed handed us tiny cups of cardamom coffee once we reached camp—he said it’s tradition to welcome guests this way. I tried a date too (sticky-sweet, not what I expected). There were cushions scattered everywhere and lanterns flickering as dusk settled in. I wandered over to meet the camels—gentle-eyed and patient with our awkward attempts to climb on. The ride was short but just long enough for me to realize how quiet everything gets out there. You could almost hear your own heartbeat between the distant music and laughter from camp.

I got henna painted on my hand by a woman named Noor who showed me how she mixes the paste herself—she laughed when I asked if it would last forever (it doesn’t). Dinner was a big spread: smoky grilled chicken, salads with mint, flatbreads warm from the fire. People went back for seconds while dancers spun across the sand—belly dance first, then this hypnotic Tanura thing with swirling skirts and colors blurring together. The fire show made everyone gasp at least once. On the drive back to Dubai I realized my shoes were full of sand and I didn’t even care—I still think about that view over the dunes when the sun dipped low, everything kind of golden-red for a minute or two.
