Ever wondered what it feels like to stand between centuries in Dubai? Our day started with the driver—Ali, who greeted us with that easy smile you only get from someone who’s lived here forever. The air in Old Dubai was thick with spice and heat; I kept catching hints of cardamom drifting out from a tiny café as we wandered Al Seef. Ali pointed at the wind towers and explained how they used to catch breezes before AC existed—honestly, I’d never thought about how people managed in this weather. We lingered by the creek, watching dhows bump softly against the dock, their paint chipped but still bright.

The city flips so fast. One minute you’re tracing your fingers along rough stone walls in an alley, next you’re staring up at the Museum of the Future—a silver loop that looks impossible. The glass bridge at Dubai Frame made my stomach drop (I’m not great with heights), but the view really does mess with your sense of time: old rooftops on one side, skyscrapers on the other. At Jumeirah Beach, sand stuck to my feet and I tried not to laugh when a gust nearly took my hat into the sea. We snapped photos of Burj Al Arab from every angle—couldn’t help it.

I didn’t expect Souk Madinat Jumeirah to smell so much like jasmine and grilled lamb—maybe I was just hungry by then. There were families everywhere, kids darting between stalls while shopkeepers called out prices half in English, half in Arabic. We stopped for mint tea (too sweet for me but apparently that’s how it’s done). Atlantis The Palm looked almost unreal against the sky; even Ali took a photo “for his cousin,” he said.

By late afternoon we pulled up at Global Village—no lines thanks to those VIP tickets (felt a bit fancy if I’m honest). It was loud and bright and smelled like every kind of food you can imagine: Turkish bread, Indian spices, something sugary from Iran.
