The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about seeing Dubai in just one day—especially with all those skyscrapers looming over everything. But our guide (Ahmed, who somehow knew every shortcut) showed up right on time in this spotless 4x4, and suddenly it felt less like a checklist and more like we were just out for a drive with a friend who happened to know the city inside out. First stop: Burj Al-Arab. You can’t go inside (unless you’re some kind of celebrity), but standing there with the wind off the Gulf and that wild sail shape behind us… I still think about that view sometimes.

The souks were next—first Madinat Jumeirah, which is all carved wood and lanterns and people bargaining in three languages at once. I tried to ask for saffron at the Dubai Spice Souk (I definitely butchered the pronunciation; Ahmed laughed but helped me out), and there was this warm, spicy smell everywhere—cardamom, something sweet I couldn’t place. The Gold Souk is just… bright. Like actually dazzling. Even if you’re not shopping for jewelry (I wasn’t), it’s worth it just to watch everyone haggle or peer into those tiny shop windows.

We cruised through Dubai Marina after that—the water looked almost green under the sun, boats sliding by between these huge glass towers. There was music somewhere, bouncing off all that concrete and glass. At Jumeirah Beach Residence we got out for a bit; people were walking dogs or just sitting on benches eating ice cream (it was hot but not unbearable). The whole thing felt both new and weirdly familiar—maybe because everyone’s from somewhere else here? Anyway, bottled water was included (needed it), AC blasting in the car between stops, so we never really wilted.
