The Experience

“You know, this street was always busy even before the skyscrapers,” our guide Rashid said as we squeezed past a group of kids chasing each other near Al Fahidi. I could smell cardamom drifting from a tiny café — someone inside waved at Rashid like they’d known him forever. The walls here aren’t polished; they’re sun-faded and rough under your hand, and honestly, that felt more real than I expected. We started at Al Fahidi metro and just walked right into another era.

I kept getting distracted by the sound of old wooden doors creaking open in the alleys. Rashid pointed out a barajeel — those wind towers — and explained how they worked before AC was even a thing. At one point he handed us a little cup of sweet tea (I spilled half of it trying to take a photo, classic me). The textile souk was next; colors everywhere, and one shopkeeper tried to teach me “shukran” but I definitely mangled it. He laughed anyway.

The best part? Crossing Dubai Creek on an abra boat. It’s just a few minutes but you get this breeze off the water and suddenly all the gold shops in Deira are sparkling in the sun. The Gold Souk itself is wild — so much jewelry it almost doesn’t look real. Spice Souk hit me with cinnamon and something floral I couldn’t place (Rashid said it was dried rose). By then my shoes were full of dust and my head full of stories about old Dubai trade routes — not what I thought I’d care about on a day trip in Dubai but… here we are.
