The experience

The tour picks you up from your hotel and heads straight into Al Fahidi, the original residential neighborhood that shaped Old Dubai between the 1700s and 1800s. You walk through Bastakiya's narrow lanes, see the Coffee Museum and the Old City Wall, then view Al Fahidi Fort and its surrounding architecture from the outside (the Dubai Museum is currently closed for renovation). The guide explains how these structures tell the story of Dubai before the towers.

From there you cross into the souks on foot. The Textile Souk shows off original pashmina and cashmere scarves. The Gold Souk is where the guide walks you through the difference between white gold, yellow gold and rose gold: details most visitors miss on their own. The Spice Souk fills the air with cardamom, saffron and oud. Then comes the highlight: a private abra ride across Dubai Creek, the traditional wooden boat that still carries locals and goods the way it has for centuries. The creek itself is the dividing line between old and new Dubai, and seeing it from the water brings that history to life.

The final stretch takes you by vehicle into Downtown Dubai, where you walk through the newer architecture: Burj Khalifa, Dubai Opera, and Burj Park with its art installations like Wings of Mexico.
