The Experience

I didn’t expect the sand to feel cold at first — you always imagine deserts as blazing hot, but stepping out of the 4x4 near those red dunes outside Dubai, it was almost chilly. Our guide Khalid grinned when I hesitated before climbing onto the quad bike. “Just go slow at first,” he said, and honestly, my heart was pounding (not in a bad way). The engine’s rumble drowned out everything for a bit. Sand sprayed up behind us and I kept thinking I’d tip over but somehow didn’t. There was this moment when we stopped on a high dune — the wind whipped my scarf around and all you could hear was that weird soft silence you get in big open places.

After the quad biking, we did a quick photo stop (Khalid insisted on taking about twenty pictures), then tried sandboarding — let’s just say I’m not great at standing upright on moving things. The camel ride was short but kind of magical; their eyelashes are longer than I thought. Back at camp by sundown, someone handed me gahwa (that cardamom coffee) and dates while music drifted from somewhere behind the tents. There were henna artists working quietly in one corner and little kids chasing each other around the shisha bar. I tried saying thank you in Arabic to one of the women making shawarma — she laughed and corrected me gently.

The night got louder with belly dancing and this wild fire show that made everyone gasp at least once. Dinner was way more than I expected: smoky grilled chicken, salads with mint, baklava so sweet it stuck to my teeth. At some point I just leaned back on those big cushions under the string lights and watched people dance or stare up at the stars. It felt like time slowed down for a bit out there — maybe it was just all that space or maybe it’s something about being far from city noise. Either way, I still think about that sky sometimes.
