The Experience

I didn’t think I’d ever get sand in my shoes this way — roaring over the red dunes outside Dubai on a quad bike, engine buzzing under me, wind sharp with that dry desert smell. Our guide, Kareem, handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew I was nervous (he probably did). The city felt far behind as we bounced out in the 4x4 — honestly, I lost track of time after the first few jolts. There was a moment when the sun hit just right and everything turned gold. I tried to take a photo but mostly just laughed instead.

After all that adrenaline from dune bashing (my heart still thumped), we slid down sandboards — not gracefully, but nobody cared. Then came the camels: gentle eyes, slow steps. I got a picture with one named Lulu who seemed unimpressed by my attempts at small talk. At camp, someone pressed sweet Arabic coffee into my hand and there were sticky dates and those little fried dough balls — luqaimat? Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it.

The camp felt alive: henna artists swirling patterns on hands, smoke curling up from shisha pipes in the corner. The barbecue smelled smoky-sweet and our waiter kept bringing plates — grilled meats, salads, bread still warm from the fire. The shows started after dark; fire spinning so close you could feel the heat for a second, then that hypnotic Tanoura dance and finally belly dancing under stars that looked impossibly clear. On the drive back to Dubai I watched city lights blink awake through tired eyes and thought about how quiet the desert suddenly felt compared to all that noise and color earlier. Still lingers with me.
