The Experience

We tumbled out of the Land Cruiser just as the city faded behind us — it’s wild how quickly Dubai’s towers give way to nothing but sand. Our driver, Khalid, grinned and asked if we were ready for “a little rollercoaster.” He wasn’t kidding. Dune bashing is more like being in a sandstorm on wheels than anything else; I kept laughing and grabbing the seat, and at one point my friend shrieked so loud even Khalid started laughing. The air tasted dry and warm, with that faint mineral tang you only get in the desert.

When we finally stopped at the Royal Adventure camp, they handed us tiny cups of Arabic coffee (I spilled half mine trying to balance dates in my other hand — coordination isn’t my thing). There was this sweet smell from the henna corner mixing with smoke from the grills. I tried saying “shukran” to the woman painting my hand; she smiled but I probably butchered it. The camels were waiting nearby, looking unimpressed by all of us city people fumbling with scarves for photos. The quad bike ride was shorter than I expected but honestly, bouncing over those dunes at sunset felt like being somewhere totally different — not sure I’ll ever get used to that color of sky.

Later we sat on low cushions under strings of lights while the belly dancer twirled past us. Some kids tried sandboarding (I chickened out after seeing one wipeout), and there was a moment when everything went quiet except for distant laughter and the sound of tea being poured. The buffet had way more options than I thought — grilled chicken, smoky eggplant stuff, soft bread I still think about sometimes. By then it was cooler out; you could smell spices and charcoal everywhere.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed out there — maybe it was all that food or just watching everyone try new things together. On the drive back to Dubai, everyone got quiet for a bit. You know how sometimes you just want to hold onto a feeling? That was me staring out at those last bits of sand before the city lights came back.
