The Experience

We bounced out of the city in a 4x4 just as the sky started to turn the color of sweet tea — you know that dusty gold? Our driver, Khalid, didn’t say much at first (I think he was sizing us up), but when we hit the dunes he grinned and cranked up some music I didn’t recognize. The sand felt endless. Windows down, I caught this whiff of cardamom from somewhere — maybe my own nerves? It’s hard to explain how quiet it gets once you leave Dubai behind. Just wind and engine and then nothing but sand.

Khalid stopped so we could try a short camel ride at this little farm — not touristy at all, just a couple of camels chewing like they had all the time in the world. I almost lost a sandal climbing up (Li laughed so hard she nearly dropped her phone). Sunset crept in fast; pink light on everything. There were dates and these sticky sweets waiting for us at the camp, plus strong Arabic coffee that honestly woke me right up. Someone offered henna painting — I hesitated but ended up with a lopsided flower on my wrist that’s still fading now.

The night got cooler than I expected. At our own VIP area (big cushions, lanterns flickering), we watched fire dancers and a Tanoura show — those spinning skirts are wild in person. The belly dancer pulled someone from another group up to join her; I was relieved it wasn’t me. Dinner was smoky BBQ and veggie stuff too, eaten under so many stars it made my phone camera useless. There was shisha smoke curling around us and everyone seemed softer somehow after that — even Khalid told us about his family back in Sharjah while we picked over dessert. No rush to leave; nobody pushing you along.

I keep thinking about how far away the city lights felt out there — just a hush except for laughter from some kids chasing each other past our table.
