The Experience

"The sand is still cool at this hour—you wait until ten and you're cooking," our guide said as the 4WD pulled up to the hotel. That's the whole point of a morning safari in Lahbab Desert: you get the adventure without the midday heat. The pickup happens from anywhere in Dubai, and then it's straight into the red dunes for 35 minutes of dune bashing—the driver handles the steering while you sit back and feel the vehicle pitch and roll across the slopes. It's physical, not gentle, but the early light makes the sand look almost bronze.

After the dune bashing comes sandboarding, which is exactly what it sounds like: you take a board down a high dune face and either nail it or eat sand trying. Most people do both. Then there's a 10 to 15 minute camel ride at a walk, slow enough to actually look around and take photos without gripping for your life. The guide takes you to a spot where the light is still soft and the dunes stretch without people in the frame—that's the photo stop, and it's built into the pace, not rushed.
