The experience

The afternoon frees up fast when the pickup arrives. A 4x4 pulls up from anywhere in Dubai and heads straight into the desert: no detours, no stops in town. Once you're deep enough that the city noise drops away, the vehicle switches to a specially equipped dune-bashing rig. For the next 35 to 40 minutes, the driver takes the dunes at angles that make the horizon tilt. You're gripping the seat or the camera, depending on what matters more in that moment. The light starts turning orange as you climb toward the high points, and by the time you reach the crest, the sun is low enough that the whole expanse of rippled sand glows.

The desert camp sits waiting with low cushions, Arabic coffee and dates. A short camel ride comes next: long enough to feel the rhythm of it, not long enough to test your patience. Henna artists paint designs on your hands while you settle in. The buffet spreads across the majlis with chicken shawarma, falafel, grilled meats and vegetarian dishes.
