The Experience
I barely had time to finish my coffee before our driver pulled up outside the hotel — big smile, crisp white kandura. The city faded fast behind us and suddenly it was just endless sand and that weird quiet you only get far from traffic. Our guide, Ahmed, cranked up some Arabic pop and pointed out the Lahbab dunes ahead. I didn’t expect the 4x4 to feel like a rollercoaster — we all yelled when the car tipped sideways on the first dune. Sand everywhere, even in my shoes.
After that wild ride (my heart still thumped), we stopped for camel rides. The camels looked sleepy but somehow dignified — their eyelashes longer than mine. Getting on was awkward; I nearly slid off when it stood up and Ahmed just laughed, said “first time?” The sun started dipping low and everything turned gold. Tried sandboarding too — let’s just say I’m better at eating than balancing.
The Bedouin camp felt almost like a movie set but realer — lanterns flickering, smells of charcoal and cardamom in the air. We dressed up in those flowing robes for photos (I looked ridiculous but everyone else did too). Dinner was smoky chicken, grilled veggies, so much rice. Someone poured me qahwa — strong coffee with a hint of spice. There were live shows: spinning dancers and a fire guy who made kids gasp. I still think about that moment when the sky went deep purple over the dunes and it was just quiet for a second before the music started again.
