The Experience

The vehicle pulls up to your hotel in the late afternoon, and within minutes you're heading into the desert countryside. The 45-minute drive itself is part of it — the landscape shifts from the city edge to open sand, and your guide points out the terrain you're about to drive. Then the dunes appear, and the real thing starts. The driver takes the 4x4 down slopes that feel steeper than they probably are, and you're gripping the seat while sand sprays past the windows. It's the kind of thing that sounds extreme in description and feels exactly as wild when it's happening.

Before the dune bashing, there's a camel ride at the meeting point — you're standing in the desert with the animal, taking photos while your guide gets the vehicle ready. Then comes the drive itself: 45 minutes of climbing and dropping through red sand dunes, with a photo stop somewhere in the middle when the light is right. If you want to try sand boarding or just stand and shoot sunset pictures, that's built in. The whole thing moves at a pace that lets you catch your breath between the adrenaline hits.

As the sun drops, you arrive at the traditional desert camp. Arabic coffee and Legemat (a sweet pastry) are waiting, and you can do another camel ride if you missed the first one, or get henna applied to your hands or feet. There's a photo station with local dress if you want to try it on. Then dinner — a buffet with grilled meat and sides, served under the stars. After eating, there's a belly dance show, a fire performance, and a Tanura (spinning dervish) show around the campfire. Shisha is available if you want it. The whole camp experience is about three hours before the 45-minute drive back to your hotel, usually arriving around 10 or 11 p.m.
