The Experience
The day starts at 8 a.m. at Beach House Gardens in Ggaba, close to Kampala University. You'll ride to the water's edge and board a local boat that ferries you and your bike across Lake Victoria to Buule landing site. Once ashore, the cycling begins—about 20 to 25 kilometers of narrow dirt roads that wind through the Peninsular, passing through villages and farmland with views of the lake throughout. The terrain is dirt and uneven, so the mountain bike and helmet are essential, and your guide will set a pace that lets you stop to rest, eat a snack or take photos without rushing.
Along the way you'll see how people live in this part of Uganda—the houses, the crops, the daily rhythms of the communities on the Peninsular. The guide explains what you're riding through and answers questions. You get a soft drink and a Rolex (a Ugandan street snack of chapati, eggs and vegetables wrapped together) to refuel partway through. The ride takes 3 to 4 hours total, with breaks built in, so it's not a sprint.
