Guided cycling and birdwatching tour

The experience

The tour starts with cycling across Bussi Island itself, where your guide navigates you through the terrain on well-maintained bikes suited to the ground. Once you've covered the island by pedal, the group transitions to a boat to enter Mabamba Swamp: the part where Shoebill Storks actually live. This two-part structure means you get both the immersion of cycling and the access a boat provides to reach the bird in its natural habitat, something you couldn't do from a bike alone.

Your guide's role is to read the swamp as you move through it, spotting the Shoebill and explaining its behavior, diet and why it's so rarely seen. Small group sizes mean the guide can adjust pace and stops based on what the group wants to linger on. The boat portion is where the sighting happens. The guide knows where these birds tend to be and how to approach without startling them. Helmets and a safety briefing come before you ride, and snacks are provided during the day.

The tour runs between one and five hours depending on how the group wants to move and what the swamp reveals on the day. Transportation is included, and children from age five are welcome. An English-speaking guide leads throughout, so language isn't a barrier to understanding what you're seeing.

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (20 to 34 years); Child (5 to 18 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What is a Shoebill Stork and why is it hard to see?

The Shoebill is a massive, prehistoric-looking wading bird found almost nowhere else on earth except Uganda's swamps. It's elusive because it lives deep in wetlands like Mabamba, away from easy access, which is why the boat portion of this tour is the method that actually gets you close enough to spot one.

Do I need to be an experienced cyclist to join this tour?

No. The bikes are well-maintained and suitable for various terrain, and the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Your guide sets the pace and can adjust the route based on the group's comfort.

How long does the boat part of the tour take?

The entire tour runs between one and five hours, with both cycling and boating included. The exact length depends on how long the group spends exploring and whether the Shoebill is spotted quickly or requires more time searching the swamp.

Will I definitely see a Shoebill Stork?

The tour is designed to search for Shoebill Storks in their natural habitat, and your guide's local knowledge increases the chances. However, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. The bird's elusive nature is part of what makes spotting one memorable.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes use of a bicycle and helmet, an English-speaking guide, snacks, and private transportation to and from the island. Lunch and tips are not included.
