Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Kampala's cultural and spiritual sites
- Walk along Kampala Road
- Visit Kasubi Tombs UNESCO site
- Shop at Bagala Craft Market
- Tour the Baha’i Temple
The experience
Your first afternoon in Kampala works best as a walk through the city's actual rhythms rather than a bus window view. Kampala Road runs as the main boulevard through the capital (lined with government offices, banks, shops and historical landmarks), and it moves constantly: early morning commuters, boda-boda riders, lunchtime vendors, evening traffic. Walking it with someone who lives here gives you the layout and the pulse at once, not a narration of what you're passing.
The Kasubi Tombs sit at the center of the tour, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its traditional African architecture and living spiritual practice rather than as a museum piece. The 2010 fire placed it on the List of World Heritage in Danger, which is why the preservation work and the ongoing cultural functions matter to Buganda and Uganda. From there, the route moves into Bagala Craft Market (a neighborhood market, not a commercial mall), where artisans sell their own work directly and tell you what's behind each piece. The Baha'i Temple on Kikaya Hill breaks the urban pace: a nine-sided dome completed in 1961, the only Baha'i House of Worship on the African continent, surrounded by gardens and offering panoramic views of the city. It's open to visitors of all faiths and built around silence rather than ritual.
Your guide speaks English throughout the four hours, and hotel pickup is included. Entrance fees to the sites are covered. Bring cash or card for any crafts or refreshments you want along the way.
