The experience

The tour starts in central Kampala and moves on foot through the city's commercial heart. Your guide leads you to Nakasero Market first, a produce hub where vendors sell exotic fruits, spices and local goods. You can sample and buy as you go. From there, the route takes you to the Old Taxi Park, the nerve center of Kampala's public transport where matatus (14-seater vans) load and depart in constant motion: a working transport hub, not a museum piece. The guide explains what you're seeing and introduces you to vendors and locals willing to talk.

Owino Market is the final major stop, and it is the largest market in Uganda. Fifty thousand traders work there, and the scale hits you as soon as you enter: the aroma of spices, the riot of colors in textiles and fruit stalls, the constant flow of locals buying and selling. Your guide navigates you through the pathways and explains what the market means to the city's daily rhythm. You also visit the Independence Monument, built in 1962 to mark Uganda's independence from British rule, and the Kampala War Cemetery, erected in 1945 to commemorate Ugandans who supported British soldiers in the World Wars.

The tour is built around your pace, not a fixed schedule. You set the rhythm: stop longer at a market stall, ask your guide about a detail, take a break on a bench. This flexibility means you see what interests you most instead of rushing through a checklist. The guide speaks English throughout and shares stories about Kampala's history and culture as you walk.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Old Taxi Park and what will I see there?

The Old Taxi Park is Kampala's main public transport hub where matatus depart constantly throughout the day. You'll watch the organized chaos of vans loading passengers and goods, and your guide will explain how this system keeps the city moving.

Can I buy things at the markets on this tour?

Yes. Nakasero Market sells locally made art, jewelry, textiles and crafts directly from artisans, and Owino Market has fresh produce, spices and traditional goods. You can sample and purchase as you walk.

How long does the tour take?

The tour runs two to three hours depending on how long you spend at each stop and how many questions you ask. Since the pace is flexible, you control how much time you spend in the markets.

What are the Independence Monument and the Kampala War Cemetery?

The Independence Monument stands in a tranquil garden and was built in 1962 to mark Uganda's independence from British colonial rule. The Kampala War Cemetery, built in 1945, commemorates Ugandans who died supporting British soldiers during World War I and World War II. It's one of Kampala's oldest monuments.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?

The tour begins in central Kampala where public transportation options are available nearby, so you can reach the meeting point by taxi or matatu if you're staying elsewhere in the city or don't have a car.
