The Experience
The morning air in Kas always has this salty tang—kind of wakes you up before the first sip of tea. We met our captain at the harbor, right by the old stone wall where cats nap in the shade. The gulet looked classic, all polished wood and blue cushions. Once we set off, the hum of the engine faded behind us and it was just sea breeze and sunlight.
Our first swim was at Pigeon Island. The water’s so clear you can count pebbles on the bottom. I spotted a couple of tiny silver fish darting around my toes—felt like they were showing off. Limanagzi Bay came next, tucked away from any crowds. Our guide, Cem, pointed out an old olive grove up on the hill—he said his uncle used to pick olives there every autumn.
Lunch was something else. The smell of grilled chicken and peppers drifted across the deck while we dried off in the sun. There’s nothing quite like eating fresh bread with your hands still salty from swimming. Afterward, we cruised to Big Pebble Beach—those stones are no joke on bare feet! But the water’s perfect for cooling off fast.
The highlight for me? Snorkeling over a sunken shipwreck near Twelve Islands Bay. It’s not deep—you can see rusty shapes below and sometimes hear muffled clinks as someone bumps their mask on a rock. Cem handed out masks and even showed us where an octopus likes to hide (I only saw its tentacle). On the way back, we stopped at Kaleköy (Simena). You can climb up to the castle if you want or just grab homemade ice cream from a lady who sets up shop by her garden gate.
