The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Kusadasi or Selcuk and a scenic drive to Pamukkale, where you walk barefoot across the terraced white travertine pools. The calcium deposits have built up over centuries, creating natural steps and shallow basins filled with warm spring water. You'll have time to wade through the pools and soak in the hot springs before moving uphill to Hierapolis, the ancient city built on top of the terraces. Your guide provides historical context about the site's significance as a UNESCO World Heritage location and explains how the mineral-rich water shaped the landscape.
At Hierapolis you'll see the Roman theater, the Temple of Apollo, and the Necropolis, where you can walk among the tombs and get a sense of the city's scale. The guide covers the religious history of the site (Paul and the Apostle Philip both preached here), and points out details in the architecture and stonework. An onyx demonstration shop is included as a stop along the route. Lunch is provided during the day, and the tour runs nine to eleven hours total, timed to get cruise passengers back to the port on schedule.
Pamukkale's entrance fee is included. If you want to visit Cleopatra's Pool (a thermal bath fed by the same springs), you can arrange that separately with the guide. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the pace suits all fitness levels, though the barefoot walk across the terraces and the uphill climb to the ruins involve some physical movement on uneven ground.

What exactly is Hierapolis and why is it built on top of Pamukkale?
Hierapolis is an ancient Roman city that was built on the hillside above the travertine terraces.
