Pamukkale Day Trip from Antalya: White Terraces & Hierapolis
Walk across mineral-white terraces and into a Roman spa city frozen in time
A guided day trip from Antalya to Pamukkale and the ancient city of Hierapolis, departing early and returning in the evening with a professional English-, German-, Russian- or Turkish-speaking guide, lunch, and hotel pickup included. The tour covers the UNESCO-listed Hierapolis ruins—the Roman amphitheater, gymnasium, Temple of Apollo and necropolis—followed by Pamukkale's travertine terraces and optional swimming in Cleopatra's Pool, where warm mineral water pools around submerged Roman columns. A wine tasting and onyx workshop visit break the day between sites.
Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Pamukkale and Hierapolis ruins
- Travel from Antalya to Pamukkale by bus
- Visit local onyx workshop and wine tasting
- Explore ancient ruins of Hierapolis
- See Roman gymnasium ruins
- Visit Roman amphitheater of Hierapolis
- Walk on white travertine terraces
- Swim or relax at Cleopatra Pool
The Experience
The bus picks you up from your Antalya hotel in the early morning and drives inland for roughly three hours. Along the way, the guide introduces the day's stops and the region's history. A tasting of locally produced Turkish wines—including fruit varieties unique to the area—happens at a planned stop, followed by a visit to a local onyx workshop where artisans carve and polish the famous Turkish stone; you can watch the process and browse handcrafted pieces if you want to take something home.
Hierapolis comes first. The guide leads you through the ancient Roman spa city, explaining its layout and significance as a UNESCO site. You'll see the grand restored Roman amphitheater with its panoramic views, the ruins of the gymnasium where athletes and students once trained, the Temple of Apollo, and the necropolis—the burial grounds that stretch across the hillside. The guide walks you through each structure, describing how Romans used this place and what the architecture tells you about daily life two thousand years ago.
After lunch (included), you move to Pamukkale itself. The white travertine terraces—formed by mineral-rich thermal waters cascading down the mountainside—are the reason most people make this trip. You walk across the formations, which feel smooth and otherworldly underfoot, and have time to photograph them from different angles. Cleopatra's Pool sits at the base, famous for its warm mineral water and the submerged Roman columns visible beneath the surface. Swimming there costs extra, but many travelers choose to wade in or float among the columns for the experience of bathing in water that has been healing skin for centuries.
The return drive to Antalya takes the same route and covers roughly three hours. The full day runs 12 to 14 hours from pickup to drop-off.
