Marmaris Turkish Bath: Scrub, Foam & Oil MassageMarmaris hammam with full body scrub, foam massage and oil massage. Includes sauna, transportation and insurance. Relax in traditional Turkish bath style.★ 4.00 (26)2hUS$ 16View › I was already halfway into my wetsuit when our instructor, Cem, started cracking jokes about how clumsy everyone looks getting ready. The boat rocked gently in Marmaris harbor, and I could smell sunscreen mixing with sea air—kind of sharp and salty. There were a few of us, some nervous, some pretending not to be. Cem handed me my mask and said something about “first-timers always breathe too fast,” which made me laugh because he was right—I’d already fogged up my mask just from nerves.
After a quick but thorough safety briefing (lots of hand signals—my “okay” looked more like a limp fish), we motored out past the last line of hotels. The water turned this deep shade of blue I’ve only ever seen in travel magazines. My first dive was maybe twenty minutes, but it felt longer—time gets weird underwater. Fish darted around us, silver flashes everywhere. I remember the tickle of bubbles against my face and this strange quiet that makes you hyper-aware of your own breathing. When we surfaced, someone cheered—no idea who, but it made me smile inside my snorkel.
Lunch was simple—rice, grilled chicken, salad—but honestly tasted better than any fancy meal because I was starving by then. Cem warned us not to eat too much before the second dive (“trust me,” he said, “you don’t want to meet your lunch twice”). The sun was bright on the deck and a couple of us just lay there for a bit, letting our wetsuits dry in patches while we swapped stories about where we were from. Second dive felt easier somehow; maybe because I wasn’t overthinking every movement this time. Saw a school of tiny blue fish and tried to remember their name—Li laughed when I tried to say it in Turkish (probably butchered it).
On the way back to Marmaris harbor, wind whipped through my hair and I caught myself grinning for no reason at all. It’s funny how quickly strangers on a boat can feel like friends after sharing something like that. Even now, sometimes when I close my eyes I can still hear that muffled underwater silence.
