The Experience

“You hear that?” our guide, Cem, asked as we stood at the gate of Hagia Sophia — the echo of the call to prayer sort of floating over the tram bells and chatter. I’d seen photos of this place forever but didn’t expect the marble to feel so cool under my hand, or for my shoes to squeak a bit on the old floor. Cem pointed out faded mosaics tucked behind columns and shared how this spot flipped between church and mosque — he made it sound like Istanbul itself was always shifting, never just one thing. It’s hard not to get lost in your own thoughts here. I kept glancing up at the dome, half-listening, half-awed.

We shuffled out into sunlight and crossed over to the Blue Mosque. There were kids darting around pigeons and a woman selling simit who smiled when I tried (badly) to say “teşekkürler.” Inside, those blue tiles really do glow in daylight — not in a postcard way, more like something lived-in. The air smelled faintly of lemon polish and incense. Cem explained how Sultan Ahmed wanted his mosque right across from Hagia Sophia — “a little rivalry,” he joked — and then led us through Hippodrome Square where you can still see bits of old chariot tracks if you squint. It’s loud here but also weirdly peaceful if you find a quiet corner.

Lunch was somewhere tucked behind a leather workshop (I forgot the name), but I remember the smell — new leather mixed with grilled lamb drifting in from next door. After that we headed toward Topkapi Palace, which sits above the Bosphorus like it’s watching everything go by. The palace is huge; rooms full of Ottoman treasures and odd little details (one window had an actual cat napping in it). On Tuesdays they swap Topkapi for the Basilica Cistern instead — Cem said it’s like stepping underground into another world entirely. I kind of wish I’d seen both.

By late afternoon my feet were tired but my head was buzzing with stories about sultans and emperors and regular people who probably just wanted some shade on days like this. Istanbul’s old city isn’t quiet or perfect — it’s layered and busy and sometimes confusing, but honestly that’s what makes it stick with you long after you leave.
