We’d barely made it out of the van in Karaköy when our guide, Cem, waved us over to a tiny tea stand. He ordered us tulip-shaped glasses of çay without even asking—“This is how we wake up here,” he grinned. I tried to copy the way he pinched the glass by its rim (burned my fingers, but he just laughed). There was this early morning dampness in the air, mixed with something sweet from a bakery nearby. I didn’t expect to feel so instantly… part of things.

Walking up toward Galata Tower, Cem pointed out faded shop signs in Armenian and Ladino—he said this hill has always been a patchwork. The tower itself loomed above us, stone against the pale sky. We didn’t go inside but stood outside while he told us about Genoese traders and old embassies. It’s funny—sometimes you think you know a place from photos, but standing there with street sounds echoing off cobblestones feels totally different. I caught myself staring at laundry lines strung between windows; someone had left out red peppers to dry.

Istiklal Street was pure chaos—in a good way. Musicians played something wild on clarinets while teenagers zipped past on electric scooters. Cem led us into Flower Passage for a peek (the smell of grilled fish hit me right away), then out again before I could really get my bearings. At Saint Anthony’s Church, we paused while an old man swept leaves from the steps and nodded at us like we were regulars. That small moment stuck with me more than any postcard view.

The Camondo Steps were our last stop—curved marble that looked almost soft from years of footsteps. Cem told us about the family who built them (bankers, apparently) and how these stairs connected whole worlds in old Istanbul. By then my legs were tired and my head full of stories—I still think about that view down to Banks Street as we said goodbye.
